Dear table tennis friends,

full of pain and also stunned we say goodbye to Rudi; who could have guessed that his match about 4 weeks ago in Zeilarn would be his last, for that evening he was fit and played very successfully.

The past weeks were a constant up and down in terms of health. On the Friday before his operation I visited him once more, we chatted about table tennis, and I was optimistic and convinced he would soon be back with us, as he had been before. Unfortunately, I was mistaken!

Rudi will be missed, that is certain. As a founding member since 1966 he was a firm part of our section – apart from one small excursion – played successfully and magnificently as a mainstay of every team, took on responsibility as section head and team captain, and his knowledge and experience were always in demand. He was not always easy, but his criticism and objections were never destructive, always constructive; he stood for the common good, did not put himself in the foreground, for it was always only about the sport of table tennis, which he loved so much.

His name was a household name in table tennis circles, not only in Lower Bavaria, and who did not have respect for his style of play and his feared serves, which caused headaches for several generations of table tennis players.

Anyone who travelled with him to tournaments – Lower Bavarian/Bavarian championships, senior tournaments, senior European championships, Grenzlandcup, etc. – could be sure of having a fighter at their side, who then at a late hour, after the repeated final “Fluchtviertel”, was likewise in his element. We will miss these evenings with him very much!

The attached memorial photo shows him as captain of our victorious team at the Grenzlandcup 2011 after the cup presentation here in Pfarrkirchen, in the best of winning moods, once again a great success in his so long career.

Dear Rudi, to know that you will never again stand at the table with us fills us with great sorrow! Your sporting comrades will never forget you!
