The team of the table tennis department of TuS 1860 Pfarrkirchen celebrated two clear wins in the Grenzland Cup 2012 and is now in the 2nd main round – now it gets tough, because it goes, and away from home at that, against a title contender.
In the preliminary round of the cup, we had to compete on 25 May 2012 in Bad Schallerbach/Austria – and the team, in the line-up Manfred Schille, Marius Jarzombski, Rudolf Sussmann and Reinhard Kroll, won confidently 8:1.
Last season we had slipped into the consolation round after an opening defeat – which, however, turned out in hindsight not to be bad at all, because we won the consolation round at home through great performances. So this time we are still in the main round.
More from Bad Schallerbach: The hosts were extremely likeable. The convivial finish that followed in a rustic tavern rounded off this successful day. The respective gifts of the teams – the town of Pfarrkirchen donated wonderful “anniversary umbrellas” – went down well; Manni, as co-organiser, deserves explicit thanks here.
The draw handed us the team of USV St. Georgen near Salzburg/Austria as our opponent in the 1st main round – this time a home match for us. St. Georgen had previously beaten the team of SF Zeilarn convincingly 8:0, against whom we had to fight hard in the season now ending and lost a point in the second half of the season.
On 11 May 2012 we competed against USV St. Georgen with the team Manfred Schille, Marius Jarzombski, Peter Wolfrum and Rudolf Sussmann. The spectators had no reason to regret coming, because an extremely exciting encounter developed. After the first six matches it stood 6:0 in our favour – some of them were close matches, three of which we only won narrowly in the 5th set. After two defeats of our players in the front pairing in the 5th set, St. Georgen then came back. Our team, however, continued to play with strong nerves and won the next two singles for a never-expected 8:2 victory.
This result by no means reflects the playing strength of the two teams. An 8:5 or 8:6 would also have been possible. Our team, this time in the best possible line-up, showed in my opinion perhaps the strongest performance of the entire season!
Afterwards we had a nice evening with the guests from Austria, who were also very pleased with our host’s gift, organised by Manni and sponsored by the Rottal Terme Bad Birnbach (thanks to marketing manager Marina Lindlbauer).
Just a look at the clubs remaining in the draw pot shows that the final round in Braunau is hardly within reach any more, because the Austrian teams are all to be classified at state-league level.
